Shops, restaurants and homes bringing Rochdale town centre back to life.
A regeneration isn’t a replacement. It’s an evolution of a built environment that acts as a catalyst for wider cultural change. This was the approach taken by Kajima and our partners Genr8 and Rochdale Borough Council in the delivery of Rochdale Riverside.
Rochdale’s tired high streets sorely needed an injection of life – and Riverside delivers. The keystone development in a wider £400 million regeneration of the town centre, phase one brought 200,000 sq ft of retail and leisure to the heart of Rochdale.
And its square footage is curated with care; this is a centre that punches well above its weight in luring Rochdale residents back from the bright lights of Manchester shopping. Major retailers include Next, H&M and Marks & Spencer, complemented by Nando’s, a Reel Cinema and a Puttstars mini golf course.
Meanwhile, a growing population has put pressure on Rochdale’s housing supply, and the council is planning an additional 10,500 new homes in response. Phase two of Rochdale Riverside includes Upperbanks, a residential development comprising 242 new homes, a 146-bed Hilton hotel and new commercial space to serve the area’s growing businesses. This puts new residents at the heart of a transformed centre – and one which is creating new sustainable employment opportunities.
Riverside responds to the needs of the local community and brings what Rochdale – a place with so much pride – needs to create an even brighter economic and social future.
